Education

EDU-Key

School attendance is up from 50% to 90%. Much stronger participation of parents and deeper involvement of teachers.
report EDU-KeyIII 2009

2002

Village Hostels

Children can remain in school in their own environment when parents have to find work elsewhere (mostly sugar cane cutting). Formerly children left school and went with their parents.

2002

Bicycle

A bike bank with 350 bicycles enables girls to visit high schools at some distance when there is not such a school in their own village. The bike enables them to reach home before dark. And that means the difference between attending and non-attending school. And often the difference between getting married at the age between fourteen and seventeen.

2002

Infrastructure Improvements

A number of school floors and windows have been repaired

2005

Digital school

Example School on the campus of YPS. Lessons with the help of good digital programs. High success rate.

Yojana has paid the investment. Another organization pays the running costs.

2008

Curi-O-Center City

Education was very one-sided. Children were not expected to understand, but just to repeat facts. In our center the children teach themselves understanding by doing. Their curiosity and interest in learning are encouraged. The center will also be used for exposure to and discussing of social important issues.

Problem: Too few staff and too little budget for the centers to function optimally

2003

Quality Education

The teachers learned to cope with the increased curiosity. Training and meetings are bearing fruit.

2007

Teachers Training

A training given by Prof. Dr. Jaap Schouten was met with great enthusiasm and some of its effects are permanent.

The training should be repeated or, even better, should be given to Indian trainers of teachers

2008

Agricultural School

Children who completed high school were reluctant to start doing the same work as their uneducated ancestors. Other than agricultural work is still not available in the area. This institute shows them that agriculture really can be a challenge. Moreover, there are much better results with the use of new methods and choices. The first students completed school and are enthusiastic.

2009

Gender inequality

Information in Curi-O-city through exhibits

Sex ratio girls - boys (0 to 6 years): 820-1000. Abortion happens under prenatal selection; after birth girls die by negligence. Adolescent girls fear their future, but feel powerless to create changes. Women are often looked at as property and as a utility and often treated as such.

All activities are focusing on making girls and boys experience that they have equal rights. We want to take advantage of an innate sense of justice. We try to start as young as possible with activities that promote interaction. Stimulating activities are like reading to the smallest; philosophy for children and mixed sports like judo for the smallest and korfball for older children.

Environment

Pot irrigation

Jalihal is a huge dry area with less than 400 mm rainfall per year

YPS will provide 200 acres of sub-soil irrigation. This means 300 million liters of water can be saved. Project is in study phase. Approach has a relatively large financial boost questions.
